January 23, 2019 Graduation Application Deadline for Spring 2019.
March 26, 2019 Last day to request a final oral exam.
April 9, 2019 Last day to hold a final oral exam.*
April 18, 2019 Last day to upload dissertation for final review by Graduate Education Office.
April 23, 2019 - 12pm NOON Last day to receive approval of final version of dissertation by Graduate Education Office.

May 7, 2019 - PhD Only Last day to request a final oral exam.

In Absentia Frequently Asked Questions

What does graduating In Absentia mean?

Ordinarily, students must be registered for the semester in which they graduate. Graduating In Absentia allows a doctoral or master’s candidate to apply to graduate without formally enrolling in courses.

Who is eligible to graduate In Absentia?

Doctoral/master’s candidates who do not make the semester deadlines for finalizing their dissertation/thesis have the option to graduate In Absentia the following semester if they meet the following criteria:

  • Must have already defended and have completed all degree requirements, and only need to receive final approval of their dissertation or thesis.

What is the procedure to graduate In Absentia?

  • Finish all requirements to graduate by the In Absentia Deadlines posted on the Office of Graduate Education website.
  • Submit an approved In Absentia Form to the Office of Graduate Education after defending your dissertation or thesis.
  • Submit an Application for Graduation online through Galaxy for the following semester, as the graduation application from the prior semester does not roll over.
  • Contact your Program Office if you need to be made “eligible to graduate.”
  • Pay the $100 In Absentia fee which will be applied to your account after Census Day.
